Modular Manufacturers

Many consumers assume the primary benefit modular manufacturers offer is lower prices. That's true but it probably ranks about third in the list of reasons to consider homes and building constructed by modular manufacturers. Superior quality and faster construction would be the first two. Let's look at some of the factors the make modular manufacturers a growing force in the building industry.

Modular manufacturers do not hire carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, and painters to build homes just as automobile manufacturers don't hire mechanics to produce their cars. Both industries hire and train people for specific tasks required in the production process. Those skilled at hanging windows may not have mastered the framing of stairs and workers skilled in framing stairs aren't likely to be good roofers. But on the other hand both of them might be more valuable than a typical carpenter with good overall carpentry skills but not well versed in any particular area. Factory production workers are also likely to perform better because they are more typically more closely supervised than on-site construction workers.

In addition, factory labor tends to be more stable and reliable than traditional construction crews. The workforce is mostly employees who receive good benefits as opposed to workers helping on a typical site-built construction project who receive not benefits. Therefore, factory production is not halted just because a few of the construction crew found better jobs or called in sick.

Factory production runs more smoothly because when the factory workforce becomes strained, modular manufacturers can easily move workers who have been trained to perform multiple jobs from one station to another without a hitch or delay in construction. And when modular manufacturers need to hire new workers, they have a built-in network of trained workers and supervisors ready to train the new hires quickly.

Modular manufacturers are inherently able to use more powerful and sophisticated construction equipment than on-site construction crews could ever use. It would be too costly and cumbersome to move the equipment from one job site to the next but that's not a problem in a modular manufacturers factory which specialized in constructing portable modular buildings.

Furthermore, because all main components are assembled with jigs, precision control is ensured. This means that every home built by modular manufacturers is more likely to be built exactly to the design specifications with all corners square and all walls plumb.

The framing materials used by modular manufacturers need to be of very good quality to function with the precision equipment in the factory. Only the highest-quality, kiln-dried lumber can be used because green, warped, badly knotted, or splintered pieced would slow down the finely tuned assembly line machinery. The result is a much higher quality building and that's why the popularity of modular manufacturers is growing.
